interesting question.
It depends what will be the purpose of the pond. If you intend to have some koi (decoarative carp) and lotus in it then you must avoid locations with al ot of sun exposure or it will develop so much algae the water will turn green most of the year, a real chore to deal with... plus the fish will not like it...
also, place it in a location which does not receive too much leaf fall, as cleanup will be bothersome and difficult (oak leaves will kill some fish). Place where there is an easy access to power supply so you can power a pump, you will need one for water recirculation, make sure the line going to the pond is on a GFI circuit. Access to a garden hose is important also. If you have small children you must make sure pond will not present a drowning hazard. Place flagstones around pond so the grass does not grow to the very edge. Plan everything for little maintenance.
If green water and leaves in the pond do not pose a problem, then place it anywhere you like.
hope that helped.

Put it somewhere where you can enjoy it. Being near electricity is a good thing, but make sure it is a GFCI circuit, or at least convertable to a GFCI circuit. The water source isn't as important since you can always just use a hose to fill it up. Some people do run water and put in a toilet tank kind of float valve to keep the pond full. I just use a hose. A little slope is desirable if you want to put a drain fitting in the bottom to help clean it out, but is not absolutely necessary.

A sunny spot is the best thing for pond plants. Stay away from large trees. Falling leaves are a pain in the butt to clean out and will kill your fish if you leave them in the pond for any length of time.

Then main thing though is the part about enjoying it. It doesn't make any sense to put it somewhere you won't sit by it and relax. It will just become a pain the *** to maintain for no reason.

The decision would come in how decorative the pond is. If it's just a water hole type then I would put it in the back of the house. If it has a statue or something in the middle then I would say the front. Ponds are nice anywhere around a house. If you entertain the I would put it where your guests could enjoy it.

Can you give more details? What size pond? Preformed? Liner? Waterfall? Stream? Fish? I built a 7' x 7' fishpond with a waterfall last year, and I have lots of tips I'd love to share with you, but don't want to overwhelm you with information you don't need. I too have an acre of land.
