how new?1month 6mths a year? go to start/all programs/accessories/system tools/click on disk cleanup and run it.
it may seem as if it is not working but it is just gathering useless files that need deleted and it may take a few minutes to do this.
if it still does it after this try updating your graphics card driver.
also have you installed any new programs or hardware that may be causing this?
if you recently have try uninstalling it and see if it clears up.
also how many icons are in your task tray in bottom right hand corner. the more you have the more resources being used .these are hard on system resouces. but we will go into that later if all else fails.
hope this helped.

Check Event Viewer for more information. We could spend ages speculating of the possible cause but Event Viewer has probably recorded something.

Start->Settings->Control Panel and double click on Administrative Tools and select Event Viewer.

Check each section for any Errors around the time your system froze. Double click on the Error and it will open a small window with some details and an Error Code number. Scroll down and there will be a link to Microsoft for more information and a possible solution.

Most likely your computer's memory is at 100% and that will make it freeze up. If you have a windows based operating system click on start then go to run. Type msconfig in the box and this should being up a box that shows the system start-up menus. Click on the processes tab and look at all the processes that run at startup. uncheck all the processes you dont use often and click apply. It will ask you to restart the computer and after you restart those processes will not run at start-up anymore

Could be a lack of system resources. If you have too many running processes that could cause it to freeze.

You can see if your computer can handle more RAM by going to Crucial.com and running a scan.
http://www.crucial.com/index.asp

Some security products are resource hogs. There are a few that don't need as many system resources to run. You can check the amount of current RAM you have (right click My Computer, Properties, General - RAM listed at the bottom).

Also remember that everything takes RAM. Not only security products but your operating system, active browser windows, running applications (such as Word, Gaming, Messenger, etc) all require system resources.

If its ATI

If you've had this problem since you bought it, take it back to the store and let them fix it. It may be hardware or software problems.

If not, you DO have malware and your anti-virus and spyware aren't doing what they're supposed to, probably because malware has disabled them.

my computer was the same and eventually it would not turn on or off, whrn it did it took at least ten minutes to statr up. it eventually stopped working, the hard drive would not come on. i suggest you disconnect all cables and then reconnect them, most important examine your usb ports for damage. it turned out a usb port was broken on my computer and had to be replaced. it was causing the hard drive to slow down and eventually it shorted it out . good luck
