I've heard all about the dangers of placing sensitive electrical components near magnetically unsheilded devices.

I am building a PC soon and I need a place to set my tower casing. I dont want my investment to be screwed up by rogue magnetic waves. I've checked and my satellites for the speaker system is sheilded but the subwoofer is not.

So can I place the tower by the subwoofer? If not what is the minimum distance?

The heavy boom of the sub and not the magnetic field will clobber your hard drive in no time at all; GUARANTEED!

Find the model and manufacturer of your motherboard and research its compatibility with the specific tower online before attempting this. Since your power supply and fan are part of the motherboard, and internal HD sizes are standards, motherboard compability should be your main concern. Also check to make sure you have enough slots for the components you want to transfer. If you start this process, first open the unit. Diagram the board and connections to each component so that you can rebuid it and know which wires connect where. Before touching anything make sure you are grounded, all units are disconnected from power source and you have proper tools. Do not open any power supply, fan or monitor units. Do not detach anything that is soldered to the motherboard and doesn't have a safely detaching plug. Try to pay attention to the the which direction each connector is plugged into the board and don't force a plug if it resists.
