Bad memories always remain even if buried somewhere deep inside of us. Every once in awhile something triggers them and they resurface.
Even in a present state of happiness with good memories, the bad ones don't disappear completely.
Bad memories also teach us things and to discount that would mean lessons lost.

Good memories can temper and balance the painful memories.
But we can grow from the painful experiences of our lives too. So it may be better for us to not forget them entirely.
