I downloaded it, but now it won't install on my computer. A page comes up saying installing but nothing ever happens. I'm scared that all the time online waiting for it to install, I will get a virus. Any advice please?

Un-install all other Anti-virus programs first. The rule is "One PC; one AV".

Then, install AVG in Safe Mode.

Still stuck? Re-post with specifics.

a)AVG is very easy to download and install. First where did you download the program from?. Best sources in my experience are from : www.download.com and the AVG's author website www.grisoft.com.
b) Check that the file size (about 21.7MB for AVG free version 7.5.472) of the download program in your hard drive is close to what you should have.
c) Wait for the installation to complete. You are NOT likely to get any virus when you are installing AVG. Though free, the software is free of virus or malware (so says the folks at download.com).
c) You need to register with grisoft.
d) the free version is for HOME use only. Not on a network.

AVG is one of the best antivirus software you can have (free or commercial).

try this: first download it again just to make sure it wasn't corrupted.....
restart the pc
--- I'm assuming your using WinXP

get offline (disable connection or however) and disable any firewall. (no other Anti-virus software is there? -- had to ask)

Now; go to Start Menu > Run and type in "%temp%" (exactly as written but without quotes) click "OK" and in the window that comes up select all and delete (there may be one or two that won't delete, just "work around" them)..
Go to your "C:\Program Files" directory and see if it made a folder (Grisoft). if it did delete it.

try the installer again, hopefully that may do it.

Well if you have time re-dwonload onto your PC Hard Drive and and try installing again...

My best advice get a different Anti-virus like Panda, McAfie, or maybe(though I hate it) Norton.

Free antivirus softwares cannot be very reliable....A few dollars can get you panda antivirus...

Good luck
