Adjust the coefficient so the exponent is even. Take the square root of the coefficient and divide the exponent by two.

For example, square root of 1.23 X 10^5?
Adjust: 12.3 X 10^4
Square root of 12.3 = 3.507
Halve the exponent: 4/2=2
Answer: 3.507 X 10^2.

Hope this helps.

If you have something like a.bcd X 10^n, just shift the decimal until n is a multiple of 2 then take the square root of the decimal fraction and multiply it by 10^(n/2). e.g.
√(8.1 X 10^5) = √(81 X 10^4) = 9 X 10^2
