Carbon brushes on copper contacts will get oily and start shorting when dirt and dust sticks to that oily residue. Some times not for years I am more worried when the ps fluid starts to run out and steering assist becomes hard to turn.

or maybe won't last a week, my question to you is this, why not fix the leak, can't be that hard or expensive. I mean if you leaking fluids somewhere would you not want to be fix and run better?

the alt is a sealed to protect it from rain, road grim etc.so the life of the alt. would not likely be shortened but the belts will slip, reducing alt. output, and excessive wear. Now why would want to leave a potential hazard go;fix the leak.
