I am Sri Lankan. I was there in the UK between 2001-2005 for my BSc ( I was 20 yrs old when I came over there). Though I was offered a chance to stay there and work for 2 years, upon completion of the course.... I chose to come back to Sri Lanka.
UK is nice. But I prefer Sri Lanka (event though there is a ongoing civil war here).
The transport, shopping experience, infrastructure is all much better than that of sri lanka (SL). Standards of living (in general) much higher than that of SL. The people in the UK, I found, are not that friendly though. Even amongst the Britishers. Here on the road, you get smiles from random strangers or a nod, in acknowledgement. Weather is warmer in SL. Winter made me feel depressed and it was bitter cold. Had to wear 2 layers of clothing.
But the nightlife is brilliant, more freedom exists. And you don't have to think of a terrorist bobm blast going off in your city anytime soon.
If you are wealthy enough, if you've got good friends, a decent job to keep you going, UK is lovely. But I prefer Sri lanka.
I guess.... one always prefers his home country no matter what, having lived there all his life.

The UK isn't too bad. I like its history, the reserved mentality of the population, and its somewhat lacklustre footy team. The UK is really unique in that we are the best in the world at complaining when the weather is too cold, but also when the weather is too hot!
Ok, it does have problems at the moment (i.e the Government) but the British will always soldier on and grin and bear it. Thats what I love about this nation, we don't have the comforts of other countries, like great weather and transport systems, but its the fact that we always make the best of what we've got. The UK rocks!

I was born here, moved to Australia when I was 6 and returned here when I was 17. The UK has so much to be proud of, the history of this little collection of Islands is an amazing sandwhich of layers and layers of influence and change. I will always have a huge amount of affection for Australia, and spend as much time there as I can, but this is my home and I love it. What I do get annoyed with, is the constant whingeing about "the standard of living" etc. Simply by living here, one is already head and shoulders above 80% of the rest of the world, but do we appreciate that? Nope, we look at the US etc and whinge because we don't have what they have. Why can't people appreciate what we DO have? The NHS may have its problems, admittedly, but at least its THERE and its free(ish), we have access to education that many others in the world don't, we have a low mortality rate etc, etc. Its about time people stopped whining about whats wrong, and started to appreciate whats right. And you know what, if something is wrong, then do something about it. That's the benefit of living in a democracy, stand up and be counted rather than sit in a corner and moan.

There are lots of reasons why I like the UK i.e. we have lots of culture and history, the countryside is beautiful and I know some really great people but the one thing I hate about the UK is the weather. Thats the only thing that would make me emigrate as I hate cold weather. If only the UK could be warmer all year round.

I love the place; parts of it are so beautiful. Some of the people are letting it down though, with violent crime and gun crime etc on the increase. And property prices are a nightmare (for buyers, anyway). Its also a gripe that things are more expensive over here than other places - rip-off britain and all that! But all in all I'm happy living in the UK. I even like the weather, most of the time!

I came to live here 6 years ago and love it. It's so accessible to the rest of Europe so having bad weather can be made up by the fact that I am able travel abroad often.
I know people complain a lot, but the government does a lot for people here compared to so many other countries. The NHS and state schools are very good. Believe me.

I hate living here. I just feel like the government doesn't care about the people.
I work for the NHS and there is no money at all. Yet, the government are spending billions on fighting a war that we have no reason to get involved in, building our own weapons of mass destruction, and bailing out 3rd world countries.
I just wish we could sort out our own problems before we wade in and interfer with other peoples problems.

Well I lived in the US for a while and got so homesick I had to come back to the UK. Problem is, the country is going downhill too fast.
