most likely there is a problem with your setup cd. try to make a new ISO image for your winxp cd and burn it to a new disc. or try putting your setup disc inside a freezer for an hour or as long as you can wait. then wipe it first before you use it.
sometimes this trick work especially if the damage is caused by lite scratches.

Dear,
Its the problem with your setup CD. I think may be it has got crashes for which by the time installation is going on it can't able to read the Cd in that particular place where the scratch is there.
Just change the source (XP ) CD & try again.

While the possiblity is good you have a dirty or scratched cd, I have run into this problem and have also found that it could be abad stick of memory causing it. If you have more than one stick of memory take one out and reboot. Try reinstalling. If it gives you the same error try the other. It is one more option if you have tried a different cd and still doesn't work. Hope this helps.

The XP disk is likely corrupted OR your hard drive is flaky.
If legal version, call Microsoft.
If not legal version, call the FBI.
Drive manufacturers have free diagnostic tools on their websites.
