Actually, you can run it side-by-side. People like me use Internet Explorer to download Microsoft Updates. I use Firefox as my main browser. It's nice because it can save your passwords and protect it with a master password. It has a dictionary like Word and you can add new entries. You can also install many plug-ins.
To sum it up, using both browsers is very helpful. I hoped that helped you. Take care now!

No need to uninstall the two will happily co-incide. However after install and when you configure Firefox you will be asked if you want to make it your default browser, selecting yes will mean that whenever you open a link it will open in Firefox rather than Internet Explorer. Run them both side by side for a while to see which you prefer. Uninstall can be carried out through add/remove programs function from control panel.

Congratulations on joining the Firefox community. You have made a wise choice. You do not need to remove Internet Explorer, in fact there is no uninstall option.
All you have to do is make sure that Firefox is your default browser and IE can just be ignored.

No, in fact it is all but impossible to install Internet Explorer.
Firefox will prompt you to allow it to become the default browser and cause (most) links from outside a web browser to open in Firefox instead of IE. You probably want to allow this. IE will remain installed though.

It is better to keep Internet Explorer, some programs automatically open Internet Explorer, such as Windows Update.

Do NOT attempt to remove IE.
Use IE for Windows Updates and Firefox for all other browsing, because it's entrenched in Windows and could cause instability.
