Poetry is as old as human civilization. Prose is relatively recent and youthful. In fact the first novel written in prose is less than a thousand years old.Epics odes religious chants and several similar song texts predate Homer, Marlow, Ovid, Jesus Christ. Prose may be popular but I can't figure any instance where it comes first except that many documents, the constitution, magazines, research reports are written in prose. But all these were once written/delivered in several forms but prose.

Does it ?

It is admittedly more popular, probably because it is more accessible.
