You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when white wings of death scatter your days.
Aye, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.
Love one another but make not a bond of love:
Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.
Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts.
And stand together, yet not too near together:
For the pillars of the temple stand apart,
And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow

:) Khalil Gibran, The Prophet.

And to answer your question, YES!

Khalil often speaks of the duality of nature, the yin and yang that gives balance and a completeness to everything around us.

What is marriage, but a union of two loving souls? They were individuals before the vows, why should it be any different after?

Also, I think he is also saying each person, prior to marriage, should be independent and self-reliant... and that marriage should make us NOT dependent on our partners, but interdependent, a team working towards a common goal.

If you have not, I suggest reading (and owning) the entire work.

Well, that sounds nice. But the irony lies in reality. I have not come across one single couple who has not hated each other at least at more than one instance. I am absolutely against marriage nowadays. May be because my life has turned rotten and my whole career is at stake and I feel like I am stuck up in a swamp all the time. So Marriage looks fine, sounds fine but feels awful as time passes by. It is my personal experience.

No. Its full of diversities, advantages and contentment. Always love is not good for where there are sweets ants are attracted, means where there is love, discord is itself generated. To live amidst all the upheavals, ups and downs is life. To face the music is life. To succeed and err is life. To celebrate successes and brooding over failures is life. Together sometime and apart sometime yet eternally one living self is life. To love and hate in the same breath is life. To be gentle and tough is life.

The value of all great concepts ironically lies in their being not quite practicable or real without some aberration or the other. And marriage is one such great concept. The poetic presentation is soothing though.

This isn't marriage. This is love in full bloom before the realities of life with its sorrows and joys takes hold of your life. But it is a beautiful poem.
