They are both allotropes of Carbon.
Diamond and graphite do not dissolve in common solvents. They cannot be decomposed into simpler substances by ordinary chemical or physical means.
The lengths of the carbon-carbon bonds in diamond and graphite have been measured by a technique called x-ray diffraction.

Graphites are Carbon and so is diamond. The difference is that diamond's molecular structure is much more durable than graphite. Graphite is like a sheet of carbon- very soft while diamonds are like pyramids.
