I wholeheartedly believe in capitalism and think that those who protest against it are going against nature.
Every living thing is selfish, you have to be to survive. It's kill or be killed in the wild; in our society, killing each other is generally frowned on and I don't disagree with that but basically, we need to earn money to suvive.
The anti-capitalist demonstrators you see shouting at every G7 summit still buy food. Where do they get the money? I hope they work for it, if they don't, someone did. Therefore they are part of the consumer/capitalist and ultimately materialist society.
Do they own posessions? Ownership of luxuries is materialism.
Communism is a fantastic idea that is impossible to achieve, we saw that with the former USSR. China continues to claim that communism can work but if it broke down in the country of its conception, what hope is there for it anywhere else and you only have to look at China's lack of civic rights to see that something is wrong.
The leaders live in luxury while most of the populace live in abject poverty. Surely this flies in the face of socialism and communism?

Basically who would we be without our possessions and wants? Many people suffer a tragedy in their lives which strips them of everything they own but they survive. I personally would think life would be much kinder if we were not so materialistic. If I lost everything I had I'd still be me but our wants is whats drives us to do the things we do.

I don't have enough money to be materialistic! I do like to have a nice car though but wouldn't care what the label on my clothes is as long as they look nice!

I don't think so. I hate to go shopping, I don't have to "have" things to be happy, I'm a giver not a taker....so I would say no.
