turning of the monitor doesn't do any harm anytime, monitor is just displaying main work it done by cpu.
but if u switch of the cpu without shutting it done then the unsaved files vanish.
for example if u r making a power point project & don't save is & just switch off the PC then it will vanish.
but the vista even retrieves unsaved files on vista files don't get deleted b4 u manually delete then.
hope i helped u.
if u wanna kno why the saved files r not harmed or anything more just feel free mail or IM me.

Turning off the monitor is no prob.

However, turning off the pc might be causing problems. It could be trashing up files as it turns off. OR, if the setting is right, it will do a normal shutdown and no harm happens.

These setting as in the Control Panel, Power Options, and select the Advanced tab to set the options for using the power button, closing the lid (on laptops), and the sleep button.

You won't do any damage by turning the monitor off whilst the PC is on. My Husband often does this instead of using a screen saver.

9 times out of 10, there won't be a problem with turning off your PC before it has shut down, the operating system will recover itself. However that one time a file may be being written to, become corruped and your PC won't re-start. I was in a hurry with my laptop, it was taking forever to close and I pulled the plug and dropped the battery. This somehow corruped the hard disk.

It is always better to close the machine down cleanly.

Turning off the monitor does no harm, but turning off the PC without a proper `shut down' can cause corruption of data.. if you do it, you must have noticed that a light blue screen comes on after turning on the computer with a message like `windows faced some errors.....' windows will try to fix the corruption. let it do so.. but strongly recommend that you spare 2 minutes and shut down windows nice & proper :)

Turning monitor, on or off, with pc on, no big deal.

Just pulling plug on pc, without properly shutting down,
could create some bad areas in files, just do a good check disk, and it should repair.

This depends on how old your computer is. It won't won't do anything on newer models, maybe you'll lose any unsaved data. Older computers, it's probably not a good idea.
