well we start out crawling out of a hole...spend our lives trying to stay out of the hole...and when ya die they put ya in a hole....so I guess we have nothing in the end..only our legacy...

No. It's a light idiom, not a heavy statement.
It is used, when one is trying something new; one doesn't know how to do the thing, has never done it before, and the connotation is, "Well, I have nothing to lose by trying," meaning, if I never tried it, I'd have nothing, so if I do try it, I have nothing to lose, or I never had that experience, so by trying, even if I fail, never having had it, I'd lose nothing.
Another example:
"Are you going to the ball game with your ex?"
"Yeah, but it makes me nervous. I still want him back."
"Well, you've got nothing to lose, then."
(You've already lost your ex. You're trying to win him back. There is "NOTHING" to lose--because it can only go up from here. See?)
Or, as the song goes, and again, it's a light statement, "When you've go nothing, you've got nothing to lose." (Implying, "so don't sweat it.")

That means: From where you are now, is the baseline.
It could be you have a million from where you started.
But you won't loose anything and you won't win or gain anything either.
Your baseline will not be touched or taken from you.
