We've worshipped them almost since the beginning of human existence because:
We think they can help us
We don't want to make them angry
We invoked them to explain natural phenomena, such as thunder, rain, etc.
We want to have a good afterlife
We think they are all powerful, and will reward us if we worship them during our lifetime
I don't think any gods would help us during our lifetime. If He didnt save the 6,000,000 at Auschwitz, under Hitler, it's probably safe to say that he doesnt interfere in our day to day lives. People dont want to think that there is nothing after death tho, and thats why many of us hope, and have always hoped, that we will live a life after death.

Its up to individuals to believe god or not. At times it helps to believe god. Take for example, you are very much stressed out and cant think clearly. Then believe in god and leave every thing on him. Then your stress will be relieved to great extent and then you can think better to resolve the problem.
But I'm sure god wont come to you and ask what you want and give it to you whatever you want.
By the way you have asked the question in wrong section. You should have asked this in some religion group...

God cannot help us because god doesn´t exist. And never did. Belief is simply an excuse that the weak minded resort to when they don´t feel like thinking. They just prefer to sit around chanting "God did it. God works in mysterious ways. It is gods will." not being able to realize that they are on their own and with a little mindpower can help themselves. I for one have never worshiped god and never will.

We as a species choose good or evil to follow, if we believe in a God we must also believe in the devil. Evil is often the conqueror because it does,nt care who or what it destroys. Good on the other hand chooses not to destroy but to build on love and compassion, evil on this planet is in the small minority but is very powerful, how we fight it has been a dilemma since time began, I choose good not because I believe in God ( I do) but because I will not allow evil in my life.

It's a flaw in human psychology. They idea of "faith" prevents people from questioning themselves.

Do you do anything bad? do you disrespect nature? If you are good to them they're good to you.
