when activated, can infrared go thru plastic such as phone casing/housing?

the infrared on my SE K600i cell phone is not working even if i turn it on. i noticed that the cell phone housing/casing totally blocks the infrared port. can infrared go thru plastic such as cell phone casing/housing?

Infrared is a light used for heating . so does your phone heat your ear?
Some plastics do block the light well while others dont.
Maybe it is an LED (light emiting diode) that has quite working ?
