I was told by someone that you can buy a can of clearcoat and spray it on an aluminum engine to prevent corrosion. He said to have it running while applying to keep out of moving parts. Just wondering if any mechanics out there know if it's safe for my engine? Could it heat up and damage? Would it affect the belts and other moving parts?

If that's a high temperature clearcoat, it won't damage it. if not, don't do it. it will burn. if your spraying a part to prevent it from rusts, then i recommend you getting a Rust-O-Leum paint. They are very effective and prevents your car from sorts of corrosion. In my opinion, i don't think clearcoat spray prevents parts from corrosion, unless you put about 5 layers of it.

Back in the mid 70's I was moonlighting at a large Chevy dealership doing car clean-up. We would spray clear coat on the hoses and engine parts to make the parts shine and make the car look newer. I never heard of any complaints from people that bought the cars. Also, we didn't do it with the engine running. The engine was cold when we did it. good luck.

im sure that there is a clear coat out there for that purpose. do not use just regular coatings on you motor. they have got to be heat resistant. ask at the parts store. or better yet got to a car show and walk around until you find what you want. the car owners are always willing to talk about their cars.

aluminum doesnt corrode, and having it running is stupid cause clear coat is flammable. I think your friend was trying to set you up

UPDATE: Aluminum does not rust, and heat resistant clearcoats are still flamable untill they are fully dry
