The best free AV programs are AVG and Avast.

The best commerical AV programs are Kapersky and NOD32. The more well-known Norton and McAfee are middle-of-the-road and real resource hogs (especially Norton)

If you are using the internet as a home user and just for general browsing, there are many good free products available to suit your needs.

For years the most well known and trusted free anti-virus product has been Grisoft's AVG, I personally use this anti-virus product and it has never failed me.

If you follow the path of getting AVG Free you will also need separate products for your firewall and anti-spy/malware.
Whereas most of the ones which you would pay for will include the full package.

However, there are other good free products for the other services, I will not go into detail about them since your question only asked about anti-virus.

AVG Free: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5
Comodo Firewall (Free): http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com
Hitmanpro (Free Anti-Spy):http://www.hitmanpro.nl/hitmanpro

Using the three products above your PC should be very secure, an example of a Commercial Security Suite is by Zone-Labs: http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/catalog_main.jsp?dc=56pus&ctry=GB&lang=en

The best (in my opinion) are Kaspersky and Nod 32.
But if you want free software, download these:

AVG antivirus
Zone Alarm firewall
Spybot Search & Destroy
AdAware SE anti-spyware

I used to use free avg. Then I switched to Rising antivirus 2007 because my brother recommended it. I bought it from this site http://www.softwareperfect.com/software/security/keep-pest-free-with-best-antivirus-software.html. So far so good. You try to check it out.
