OK so I cut my finger a week ago this past Monday. It got smashed/cut between 2 pieces of farm machinery. It was at the joint and only had to have 3 stitches. Dr said I could take my stitches out in a week. Took them out late yesterday afternoon and bent my finger and the cut is still 2-3 cm deep. Put Neosporin on it and a bandaide. Today went to dress it and looks like a reddish circle around the cut. It also is still pretty sore when a try to use that finger very much. They did not x-ray when they stitched it up, but can move my finger just can't straighten it out.

Keep the area clean and covered with a bandaid. The neosporin ointment is OK to use, but use only a little bit of it because a little goes a long way. Watch it very carefully and if there's any change like more redness or swelling or heat around the area then contact your doctor without delay as these could be signs of infection.

OK - first, did the doctor say that YOU could take the stitches out, or did he just say "Come back in a week to have your stitches out"? There's a big difference. A doctor doesn't remove stitches when the cut isn't sufficiently healed, which is what it sounds like you did - that's why you're supposed to go back, so that a trained eye can determine if things are healing right. You need to go back and find out what you need to do next.

It shouldn't be sore by this point, certainly, so my guess is that it's infected. Since it's been a week, there's a decent chance they'll have to open it up again, drain it, and re-close it. If they do that - let THEM take the stitches out the second time around.

If you are seeing any sort of red streaks run up the finger to the hand, go to the ER. Do it NOW; do not wait until morning; sepsis spreads rapidly and can be deadly.

Tell them you want a TETANUS shot this time, by the way.

If you are not planning to go back to the doctor to get it re-stitched, Then I would suggest soaking it 2-3 times daily in salt water. Regular table salt( the more-the better), in a bowl with water as warm as you can stand. keep it dry and clean when not soaking it. You should see a definite improvement within 1-1/2 weeks.

It may be infected go back to the doctor. If the cut is still open or reopened the stitches were removed too soon.

try some scar cream to get ride of the redness but if it hurts like that I would talk to your Doctor they might have missed something. I have had stitches three times and its always a little tender after wards for awhile but if you can't straighten it maybe its sprained.
