Besides that I have had similar surgery, I also help preform it.
The pins (K-wires is the technical term) hold the bone fragments in place (reduction) until healing can happen. They will be taken out in 6-8wks

I severely broke my arm and wrist and I had two pins inserted into my bone. All the pins are there is too hold the bone into place and for the bone to heal much more quicker. The pins really do help. Just make sure when you get the pins out they give you pain meds. Mine were taken out and I had no pain meds in me. It doesn't feel the greatest. We were in the farthest room away from the waiting room and the receptionist heard me yell. Ha ha.

They may or may not remove the pins. It helps the bones stay in the correct position so they will heal correctly. The healing time is usually 6 weeks. My arm hurt for over a year after the cast was removed. Now except for a slight deformity and huge scar you would not know what happened.

The pin holds the pieces of bone in close proximity so that the break can heal. It also adds strength to the bone if it's at a critical spot - like any structure, bones take greater stresses at some points than at others, so this is just a little added insurance.

The pin holds the bone together so that it can heal naturally.

The pins just help hold it together, support it. After awhile you'll forget they are even there. I have 3 and a metal plate in my Leg-ankle area.
