This is an indication that something is wrong. Because of how bad these cramps are I would recommend getting in to see your dr to have them evaluate this situation further to see what they think is going on.

I am a student of homeopathy. Here is what I recommend.
Try to limit the amount of salt and caffeine you intake. Caffeine increases the abdominal contractions of the body. Which will make the menstrual cramps worse. Salt of course diminishes the amount of water in your system, which also make the cramps worse.

You get bad menstrual cramps because your uterus is shedding its lining of tissue and blood, and to shed its lining, it must contract muscles. The contracting muscles are the cramps you feel.

it's perfectly normal to have bad cramps before your cycle. it depends on the person. usually there's a correlation between a heavy flow and painful cramps. my gynocologist told me to take midol or motrin even before feeling cramps to prevent them from occurring. going on the pill can also help.
