The periods you're talking about have produced better shooters because most of those players did have better fundamentals than most players have nowadays. Playing at highschools and at least 3 years of college hoops gives time to work on fundamentals and mental skills.

When you're 23 and you start working on the mechanics of your shot, you're useally too late ... Another reason for the higher percentages in those days for most of the teams was that there were more shots for everyone (so it was easier to get into the flow) and there was less dependancy on defense.

NBA basketball will always be a game of size. With certain exceptions, each decade seems to produce better shooters.

The era of the "set shooter" was back in the late 1940s or early 1950s unless you are Brent Barry in 2007 shooting 3 point set shots.

The biggest change was that from about 1961 to 2001 in the NBA that there was no zone defense and everyone had to guard a man which prevented double and triple teams other than for more than just a few seconds.

So, since 2001, the new defense rules in the NBA have limited the offenses of most teams.

Although, under the old rules of no zone defenses and no prolonged double or triple teams and in the era of the "illegal defense violation" from 1961 to 2001, the Coach Popovich coached San Antonio Spurs in June, 1999 defeated the New York Knicks by playing tough man to man defense with the Twin Towers of David Robinson and Tim Duncan guarding the basket on the defensive end where both teams in a NBA Final combined scored 147 points which matched the total of 147 points scored in Game Three of the 2007 NBA Finals.

The better free throw shooters of the 2007 era are better than the better free throw shooters as a general rule of yesteryear; although, there is the occasional exception like Frank Ramsey shot over 94% from the free throw line for an entire NBA season back in the mid 1950s. Over the years, the big men still do not have to be able to make free throws whether their names are Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Shaq, or Tim Duncan as a great and talented big man brings other qualities to the game that they do not have to be able to shoot free throws on any consistent basis.

With the advent of the three point line in the NBA circa 1978 which started in the old ABA circa 1967 or whenever has evolved from a strategic shot just taken a few times a game in the late 1970s and early 1980s era to a tactical shot taken many times a game which has led to better outside shooting shifting the emphasis of scoring away from the interior out to the perimeter over the last number of decades.

Nobody "always" makes shots. That having been said. The ball "should" go through the hoop about half of the time.

Kevin McHale was right about the league being diluted. When he said this back in the early 90's I scoffed at the idea. Who knew, that the NBA would take SO MANY UNDERCLASSMEN and HIGH SCHOOLERS?

The biggest difference between guys today and yesterdays players? Take a guy like Dan Issel, who if he was 25 would probably average 28 points a game easily. He had spots on the floor that if you were not ALL OVER HIM the ball was almost certainly going THROUGH THE HOLE!

Where are those guys today?

Probably the biggest problem is that players want to be "cool" and don't use the backboard or shoot hookshots. These are ALL HIGH PERCENTAGE SHOTS.

It works for Tim Duncan, but no one else in the league can seem to see that for themselves.

Oh well...

Yes. Not only did their shots go in but they also shot better in the clutch. Guys like Jerry West (60's), Pistol Pete (70's) and Larry Bird (80's) could also find various ways to shoot whereas today's shooters are too scientific that they won't hit their shots unless they're squared to the basket and with both feet firmly planted on the floor. Old school players could shoot even on the wrong foot.

it is somewhat puzzling to analyze both eras. genuine a lot of todays gamers are better, speedier and better.....yet fundamentals have suffered. loose throws for instance, immediately 70% is seen brilliant, again interior the day Oscar Robinson became 88% and extra suitable than any element guard immediately. the regulations have replaced a lot, the lane is wider, the three element line is added, hand checking is in basic terms about outlawed immediately. immediately, they just about under no circumstances call vacationing or 3 seconds. stress out became a foul again then. objective tending immediately is a comic tale. again interior the day, transferring monitors were ok, see you later as you probably did not knock any tooth out. wearing over is under no circumstances noted as, even if that is because the game has advanced to playground variety of sport. because the mid eighty's the game has change right into a isolation sport and clearouts. immediately it isn't a crew sport, its performed extra on adventure ups. finally, no loose employer or income cap, you had to strengthen gamers. immediately, you could pass out an purchase a Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett to get a championship, the posh tax offset is larger value ticket expenses next 3 hundred and sixty 5 days and merchandise. The gamers were in basic terms just about as good, if no extra suitable, its in basic terms that the game is thoroughly different.

todays game is all 'flash'. the dunk.shooting 3 pointers.the player pool is much younger today.too many players have not learned the fundamentals, esp of shooting.the guys who were less athletic could still be good midrange shooters and be in the league.today the defense does not leave the shooting 'holes' that there were in earlier eras.illegal defense, zone defense has ruined the game.the game is not about scoring from all angles any more.there is not 'hunger' in the game it is about making money. the 'money' is not in shooting, its in dunking and making it on espn.shooting is a lost art because its not 'hilight' material.
