If you know of any genetic defects that are in the family then it may be as well to get checked out before having a baby. Jew's in particular have certain genetic defects that can be passed on. But I wouldn't worry if you know of nothing and are 'distant' cousins. I have a perfect little girl fathered by my actual cousin (our parents are brother and sister). No problems. It also depends on how much family in breeding has gone on in the past. You sound not english. Was it an arranged marriage?

how distant? 4th will be safe i think....

"There is no evidence to support the assumption that children resulting from incestuous relationships run a greater risk of being malformed than other children." -->Carl Henry Olstrom, M.D. Medical World News , February 4, 1967.

However, three much smaller studies showed serious birth defects in up to one-fourth of all children that were a product of bloodline incest, an incidence that is about fifteen times the expected normal frequency. -->Mary Meehan. "Facing the Hard Cases." Human Life Review , Summer 1983, pages 19 to 36.

No because it is legal to marry your cousin, the reason its illegal to have relations with your brothers sisters etc is because of the risk of birth defects. A cousin however is perfectly safe and legal. Many cultures marry cousins, its fine ignore the ignoramuses on here!

If it's more than twice removed you should be ok. Have some genetic blood testing done on you & the father/cousin. Also have an amino or a CVS test done on the baby in utero to make sure there are no defects while the baby is forming.

Depends how distant the cousin is. First cousins are a bit too close, since it can cause defects. Second cousins are better and by third cousin the changes for anomalities are slim. Anyhow, if you go back far enough, we're all distantly related, right? :)

I read reecntly that even first cousins have a very low chance of problems. Its when its father daughter / brother sister et cetera that the problems really come in. I wouldnt worry at all in a lot of cultures it is routine to marry a cousin.

Not true at all - don't worry. You have to be quite closely related to risk any significant problems.

Beyond second cousins you're legally and physiologically safe, but family gatherings are likely to be awkward.
