OMG, decent but cheap headshot places are a dime a dozen in LA... You do NOT need to spend anywhere near $500!
Check this out: Go to WorkingActors.com, click on actors, then click marketing, then photographers and check out any number of photogs websites and see who has shots that appeal to you.
As for printing up the pics, I've gone to Quantity photo, Quality, or wherever.. thet're all ok so far. The link above has a few places listed as well. Call around for current pricing or check out their websites... everyone has a website these days!
Pick up a copy of Backstage tomorrow and there are any number of ads for discount headshot packages! Same thing, check out their websites and see who has shots that you like! Don't be afraid to be picky. Call and speak to the photog. See who you have a rapport with.
Good luck!

You got some good answers. I'd say go to any photo reproduction place and look at their books. Find a photog who's work you like. Call and ask what they charge. Above all, go to a HEADSHOT photographer. Someone who understands what the business is about. And yeah, it's not cheap. But what is?

DO NOT PAY 400 OR 500 FOR HEADSHOTS!!! And, do not pay 50 dollars for headshots. There are wonderful photographers out there that charge UNDER 200 dollars!!I've had more than a dozen headshot sittings and I have never ever paid more than 200 dollars.
My photographer is Robert Kazandjian. Go to www.kazphoto.com and check him out. If you tell him Allie Raye referred you, you'll get a break.
Also, there are other photographers that will rip you off if they know you don't know how much to pay and are willing to put out that kind of money. Please!!! don't pay that much!! You then have to pay under 100 for reproducing your photos. Like Reproductions or Prints Charmin'.
Go to www.la411.com and check that out as well.
Also, lacasting.com
and if you're SAG, go to SAG.org
All the best!

I work in NY and use a company called Reproductions, which are certainly not the only company that reproduces your headshots and makes postcards and business cards, but they are one of, if not the most reputable.
They also have an office in LA:
3499 Cahuenga Boulevard West
Los Angeles, CA 90068
Tel: 323.845.9595
Outside LA: 888.797.7795
Fax: 323.845.0188
They're quality and service over the last three years has been impeccable.
But look around and then decide.
Hope that helps.

There are a ton of places to get them taken, just make sure that you meet the photographer first. If you're not comfortable it will show up in your pics. There is absolutely no point to paying more than $400 - $500, and you can find cheaper. Duplication of the pictures is surprisingly cheap ($100 for 300 color copies is normal).
Good Luck!

Try looking on craigslist.
I live in NYC and sometimes photographers post that they will give you head shots (for very little or almost nothing) so that they can build up their OWN portfolio.
Or you can look up Los Angeles Photographers in ASK or GOOGLE ... look at their websites to see if you like their style.
When you find one you like, give him or her a call & ask if there is a way you can barter for your pix. Photographers sometimes need schleppers or people to do things for them. So maybe you can get good shots for relatively little ... or just your tijme.
