I have a curiosity about Ocean beach in San Francisco. I recently walked the beach across the street from the San Francisco zoo, as well as by the Cliff House. Back in 1979 I walked the same stretch of beach with my dad and walked through an underground tunnel that led from the beach to the other side of the Great Highway. The tunnel seems to have gone missing. I was young and maybe a bit confused as to which beach it was. One thing I did see during my recent trip to this particular beach was a rusted platform around 10 feet high. This seemed to jog my memory, so I do think that it was the right beach. Thinking back I thought that somehow this platform with a small stairway served as the opening for this underground tunnel. But it seemed that the tunnel entrance had been blocked off. I would appreciate some information on this matter.

Hi ya,

I have been through both existing tunnels that run under the Great Highway many times, but not in 10 years. They are still there you can enter the Taravel Street beach access tunnel where 48th avenue merges with (lower) Great Highway Street and crosses with Taravel Street, then walk through the tunnel about 50 yards and come out right onto the beach. The Judah Street beach access tunnel is at the corners of La Playa and Judah Street. I seem to remember a third one maybe next to the ancient public restrooms on La Playa just north of the zoo. Also, it sounds to me like the one you may be describing is the Sutro Baths / Point Lobos tunnel near the top of the Great Highway next to the Cliff House.

Nice to remember these places, hope this jogs the memory.

The tunnels are long gone. They were filled in during the renovation of the Great Highway about 20 years ago
