I found a house I like. The electrical box was unlike any I'd ever seen before. The box itself looked really old. There were only two fuses inside. They were very large. About 5" long and 2" wide. Anybody ever seen one of these? I'm not sure if I want to buy the house, but I'm sure an inspector would know right away. I am curious about it now. Got an answer?

yes, there is an additional box immediately to the left. It contains 6 small basic fuses.

Yes i have seen these and it is a main disconnect box ..the home i was raised in had the same setup that you are describing..it is very old and needs to be replaced along with the fuse box and possibly even some of the wiring and outlets...I would have reputable home inspector come and look at it and see what recommendations he would make. you might also ask the orignal homeowners to upgrade the electrical system...

That's the main disconnect and there should be another panel that will have fuses or breakers and yes a home inspector would be advised to hire before you buy, make sure that you put in the offer to purchase that seller to pay to correct any code violations found by home inspector. Good Luck

Sounds like a fused disconnect box. That will kill your main power. It then runs to another box with your circuit breakers to the individual circuits.
I would have the house inspected by a professional before you buy it. I would think that the wiring is pretty old and may well need to be replaced. Good luck.

They're cylindrical, right? They're high-load fuses, pretty common in industrial applications but not often used in houses. They're probably inline with the service main (or the first thing inside your house from outside at the meter).
There SHOULD be another electrical panel/switchbox/fusebox somewhere else in the house...hunt for it. If there isn't one, the house should probably be rewired for safety reasons...I'd walk.
