I have been in the restaurant industry for 11 years and have seen many grills cleaned with water and have never heard of any rusting. With that said I agree with Orinoco River. Although cleaning the grill is not the only thing that should be done. Your grill must be seasoned or conditioned properly, especially after you degrease, such as after a hood/vent cleaning!

Are you talking about the type of grill where you cook hamburger meat?..No, it will not rust..it has been designed to be clean with degreaser and hot water. The water evaporates very quickly once it is in contact with the hot surface. It is also designed to withstand high temperatures constantly...Some restaurants are open 24 hours. They have the equipment lifetime in the budget. Don't worry about the grill..
