There are many reasons, and while there are people out there that do it for attention, Or sometimes if it is a single incident with deep wounds it may be a suicide attempt. But most people who cut or SI (self injure) do it because it is the only coping methods they have learned. They do it to cope with stress and pain. check out the links for more info.

Ok I used to have a friend in jr; High who used to cut her self and she told me simply in a poem: can not keep the urges at bay
To cut myself or harm myself in a bad way.
Maybe if people see wounds, they will know how much I'm hurting on the inside
But I'm ashamed, keep covered up, they might think I've lost my mind!
It's the only way I can express what I can not say
And at times is the only way to help me get through the day.
I try to stop it for myself and for others
But I feel I must be punished for letting down my brothers.
When I look in the mirror, I don't like hwat I see
How I wish I could be anyone, other than me!
All I seem to do is make my friends upset or mad
I really can't help it, I wish I didn't feel so sad!
and i was like okay.

They cut to stop their emotional pain.
Few of us have been so hungry that we have actually been in physical pain. But we have all heard of hunger pains. For the people who cut themselves, their emotional pain is much more intense than for the average person. It is a intensity of pain that many of us have never felt, just as we have never felt the pain of intense starvation. But these people are starving emotionally. Looking at it this way might help us understand what they need and why they cut.

I cut myself. It's not for attention (though some people do cut theirselves for attention) and it's not because I wanted to kill myself (I am very careful about where I cut myself). For some people it's just a form of body modification; most often, however, it's a form of meditation. It helps you to focus your attention and "zone out" so to speak. Helps you to take your mind off of emotional pain, or painful thoughts. However, it should always be done under supervision of someone who knows how to deal with it if something goes wrong (like if the blade slips and you actual hurt yourself) and only if you are an adult.

I cut myself once, it was way back when I am only 14. I guess guardian angel is right, it does make a "Happy Chemical". More of it also because of influence.
Teens don't really know how to express by words.. so they took their anger else where. But as you get older and more mature, "Hell no" I am so afraid of blood now. Never will I ever hurt myself in any way...

when you cut yourself jut deep enough (but not too deep..like death deep) it releases endorphines. thats the "happy chemical" in the brain.which is why they "feel better"
the reasons a person starts cutting in the 1st place usually have to do with serious issues. people can say "its just for attention!" but if you cut in places that people cant see, then its obviously not for attention.
although there are some people who do it for attention, most people dont. when its done for attention they show it off a little.

My nephew said it was because after arguments with his dad (his dad is a "red neck") he couldn't feel anything any more and cutting himself helped him to feel something.
Thank goodness his dad is out of the house and there is no more cutting.
