write a letter of praise to your boss if a co-worker went above and beyond their job description?
(IE they stayed late to help clean up a huge mess that wasn't reported till after they were off the clock?)

Yes, I would. Things like that should not go unappreciated and unnoticed and I would like my colleagues do the same for me :) But that's not to say that I would go all way out to do things just because I want recognition :)

I'm guessing you did this. If so, pat yourself on the back :) . Anyways, go ahead and report it, you or the coworker deserves to either have those hours clocked or get some sort of bonus for going above and beyond their job. Of course, there are those moody types of bosses who wont give a care, so if you think yours is the type to listen, more power to ya.

Yes, I would.
I've also written e-mails to supervisors of people who were very friendly and helpful when I tried getting accomodations traveling on transit. The lady was trying to get a bus (with a lift for wheelchair because I'm a wheelchair user) for me to rent for a night I wanted to get to a Gospel concert. Turns out that e-mail of praise got the lady off work early that day.:)

I don't think I'd write a letter, but I'd probably tell them in person. I like to tell people about when people go above and beyond so they can receive the reward they deserve, especially since I see so little of it.
