The 8600GT, defintitely. Better performance and DirectX 10 support. Here is a direct comparison.

While the 8600GT is a weaker version of the 8800 series, the Radeon X1650XT is competitor to the Nvidia 7600 line, not the 8000 series. They aren't really in the same category.

I would actually get the 8600 GTS. I know, it's a few bucks more, but it's worth it. Price over performance, it wins. Also, GTS's are HDCP enabled, which will be good in the long run. I advice Nvidia over Ati, it's more mainstream, and I've never had too much problem with them personally.
Trust me, getting the GTS will not be a mistake, but between those two I would lean over to the 8600 GT because it runs dx10.

Hope that helps!

I have an ATI X1650 XGE and it runs very nicely. Highest end game I've tried to run is either Half-life 2 or LOTRO online but it runs both at the highest possible quality. It basically carries my measly 2.8 ghz processor.

I'm getting the 8800GTS,
i won't recommend getting the ATI one because it doesn't support Dx10... which is what future 2007+ games are going to use.
