According to some legends, the Sword was Uther's sword, the symbol of the High King of Britain. After Uther's death there is no known heir and the Low Kings (barons) are fighting among each other who is to be the next High King of Britain.
Merlin, who was Uther counselor, has the solution: he takes Uther's sword and with his magic, he runs it into a rock. The one man who is able to draw the sword from the stone again will be the rightful High King.
Legends indicate that each year the Low Kings met to hold tourneys and attempt to pull the sword from the stone.
Until one day, Sir Ector brought his sons Kay and Arthur, (not knowing he is not Ector's real son but fostered by him) came to the place for a tournament.
Arthur, being squirl to Ector and Kay, has to get Kay a new sword for his one is broken. He passed the rock, drew the sword, and returned to Ector and Kay who briefly considered taking the throne themselves. Then Merlin reappears and declares Arthur, (who was probably in his late teens) to be Uther's son and rightful heir to the throne.
Proof is demanded by the knights and rulers present. The sword is once again placed in the stone and none but Arthur can withdraw it.
Another version of the story claims that it was Uther himself who drove the sword into the stone.
Merlin brings Uther to the lake, where he receives the sword Excalibur, which is given to him by the Lady of the Lake, a hand rising from the water. The power of the sword will make him king.
Merlin pressures Uther to make a deal with his main opponent, the Duke of Cornwall. But when Uther sees Cornwall's wife, Ygraine, his lust took over him. He entered into a deal with Merlin. Merlin cast a spell on Uther to make him take the appearance of Cornwall, which enables him to make love to Ygraine, while the real Cornwall dies in battle.
The daughter of the Duke of Cornwall and Ygraine, Morgana, knows what has really happened.
Nine months later, Merlin demands what Uther promised him, the fruit of his lust, the baby Arthur. Merlin walks into the woods and Uther chases him to get the child back. But the king is ambushed. With his last bit of strength Uther drives Excalibur into a stone and dies. Merlin then predicts that: "he who draws the sword from the stone shall be king".
