I always thought of it as a unisex name. The first Dakota that I ever met was a boy and he was Native American and had a sister named Shawnee. I guess now with the fame of Dakota Fanning, more people associate it with a feminine tone. As for the -a ending, my best friend's son is named, Indiana, and his name always gets mistaken as a girl name. I guess society's perceptions are all different.

When I was a camp counsler I knew this little boy whose name was Dakota. But then theres Dakota Fanning. So it can be either. I personally think it sounds more like a masculine name.

Dakota has primarily been a girls name. Specifically, it has to do with the ending of the name. When a name ends in "a," it's usually a female reference.

Dakota is a state name.
The name you give a child is what he or she will be called for the rest of his or her life. Don't make them suffer just because you want to impress other parents.
Give your child a real name.
