The Printing Press.

Before movable type, it took months and years to mass copy a book. Afterwards, it took only a few days. New ideas and innovations could cross continents in the same amount of time that it took to copy one book by hand.

And it was cheaper, too! The only literate people at the time were the nobility (maybe) and monks. You had to pay them (usually more than one monk worked on the same job) a good sum of money for the time it took to read and copy the manuscript. And then there was the possibility of irregularities and typos. Not every copy of a hand-written document was the same. One copy might have a word misspelled, another copy of the same document would have a different word incorrect. With movable type, the chances of a typos decreased drastically, and if one did occur, it occured in the same place.

The literacy rate rose drastically. Ideas could spread quicker and faster as those who previously could not read now could and could acquire the new technologies that were being developed.

Cast my vote for the movable type printing press. Thank you Johannes Gutenburg!

Wow, there are so many inventions. Practically everything we use on a daily basis was invented at some point in time. The light bulb, computer, and even toilet paper. Some inventions we take for granted are the wheel, fire, tap water, and the drive through at your local McDonald's. For me i have to say the best invention in the entire world is the drive through at McDonald's!!!

To me it's not really an invention but a creation of the electricity.
As you know Benjamin Franklyn proved the electric energy through out the lighting.
Today about 90% of any new invention uses electric energy, in other words electricity it's the foundation of most new inventions

Big Ben is absolutely correct, before the movable type printing press, only the clergy and/or nobility knew how to read and write.

Therefore, no one questioned what the clergy told them about religion, science, math, or the law.

Movable type allowed the masses to be educated and allowed the spread of ideas not just in a town, but across the world. This also allowed for the collection of huge amounts of knowledge at your fingertips for you to access at any time and allowed for the expansion of peoples minds which drove them to think new thoughts, dream new dreams, and build new things that no one had ever considered before.

Furthermore the availability of reading for the masses allowed great strides in all other fields, like the law, it allowed for people to be able to KNOW what they were signing thus allowing them greater personal freedoms.

I believe it is the wheel. The wheel is everywhere on all our cars, trains, planes, machines, wagons, and most factory and farm equipment. What could we move without wheels?
It is also a major component in most engines etc. Gears, cogs, pulleys and flywheels all come from the same source.

The discovery (not an invention) of how to make fire is considered one of humankind's most important advances, allowing higher hominids to ward off wild animals, cook food, and control their own source of light and warmth.

No doubt the Jarvik Artificial Heart. This invention is able to help those who need a heart transplant or a valve transplant. It is absolutely amazing and most of the credit can go to Dr. Jarvik, for who it was named after.
I have a heart condition and may need a transplant or repair someday soon, so of course I appreciate this life-saving, amazing invention.

relatively it would possibly no longer be a undesirable factor. I heard that Obama have been given right into a combat together with his teleprompter final Thursday. that they had a actual coverage conflict of words however the teleprompter insisted that it trumped Obama in such concerns. It have been given violent. Very unhappy for politics, extremely after his teleprompter has been so dedicated all this time.

Might not be the "greatest", but religion sure seems to be the most important thing man ever created.
