I don't think women should because it just is not a good idea to let a woman drive a car with a stick shift being that there are so many things that could distract her. As many people know, in general, women drivers have a bad reputation. Adding a stick shift the equation makes it worse, especially since they talk on cell phones, put on lipstick while driving, are distracted by kids, eating while driving, messing with the radio and a/c, or breastfeeding. By the way, women shouldn't be allowed to breastfeed or eat while they are driving either but that could be for another question. I think it is okay if women eat or feed a baby while in the passenger seat or in the back, but I believe the baby should be in the car seat buckled up. I'm not trying to be mean here, just trying to be protective and I hope your husband or boyfriend agrees with me.

Oh I absolutely love this question, simply to be a case in point to prove you WRONG!

HA! I taught MYSELF at age 16 to drive a stick, NEITHER of my parents knew how, and the model of car I wanted to buy (like most) came cheaper with a manual transmission. I still drive and prefer a stick to this day.

Oh and here's a little salt on the wound.....
The two MOST macho men you ever wanna meet, my father and my boyfriend were both taught (patiently) by none other than yours truly to drive a manual.

**cracks knuckles** tee hee!

**whispers** oh, and if we're such bad drivers, remind me why my car insurance is cheaper?

Of course children should be firmly contained in a car. If a baby needs nursing it is necessary to pull aside and do what must be done.

BUT... once again you push into ridiculous territory. Stick shift is just another way to drive. Lord, I think that perhaps you are comparing a woman handling a car's stick shift to handling a man's "stick shift"!

How positively Victorian of you! I am beginning to wonder when you will ask about covering the legs of a piano with fabric because "legs" might give a woman the idea of exposing her gams.

Women drivers have a bad rep? I can tell you if you look at stats, you will find women drivers, esp those with children, are lowest in having accidents. The highest number of accidents are males in their late teens to late 20's.

I have driven both and live in mountainous turf. Stick shift is a ball on dangerous twisty roads! I have only had one accident driving and even that was not my fault since I was going slowly and hit an oil slick. This had nuffin to do with stick shift!

A man never drives and fiddles with the radio, talks on his cell or puts on his makeup while he drives? Lordy, lordie, lordy!

I drive a stick better than my husband, and have never had an accident, while he has been involved in 2 major and numerous minor ones. I don't put on lipstick, eat, talk on cell phones, etc. etc. etc. while driving. Hubby, on the other hand, yacks at all his friends on the cell phone, eats, fiddles with the radio, etc. etc. etc. As far as breastfeeding while driving, that's just plain ridiculous, and any woman caught doing that should have her license revoked.

My first car had a manual transmission 70's VW Beetle - Orange and my best friend in high school (girl) got a vintage car that had what she called, "a three on the tree" shift -

If it runs we can drive it and do. My gurlz and I never gave a second thought to asking permission for ANYTHING!!

And we have found generally that there is a large population of men who like women like us and find our driving skillz of such little concern because of all of our infinite skillz, qualities, and attributes.

Manual transmissions are way more fun to drive. They also have better speed up the mountains that are our backyard. My husband would 'let' me drive whatever I chose. I have been driving for 28 years and have never had an accident when I was at fault. Havent even had a speeding ticket since I was 18.

Yes my husband lets me drive a stick shift car...gasp!...and I am a natural blond!! We test drove a mustang one time, and he let me do most of the driving.
I agree with you that women are distracted drivers, but I love driving a standard shift sooo much that all I can think about is that (when I am driving one).

My fiance wants me to drive his car that's a manual. I learned how to drive on a manual but that was when I was very young, and I've driven an automatic since then and I've forgotten everything about driving manuals. But I refuse to drive his for one, I'm left handed, and for another, he's a horrible teacher and makes me feel very nervous and uncomfortable while he's telling me I'm doing stuff wrong.

Edit: by the way, who the HELL breastfeeds while driving?!?! That's gross and wrong.
