multiply by 3 on both sides to get rid of the 1/3
(3) 1/3(w + 2)= 5 x 3
w + 2 = 15
w = 13

5 times 3 minus 2 =13
so w =13

I'm assuming (w + 2) is in the numerator...

multiply 3 to both sides...
w + 2 = 15

subtract 2 from both sides...
w = 13

If (w+2) is in the denominator,
multiply 3(w+2) to both sides...
1 = 5 * 3(w + 2)
1 = 15(w + 2)
1 = 15w + 30

Then subtract 30 from both sides...
-29 = 15w

Divide both sides by 15...
w = - 29/15

first distribute: 1/3w+(1/3)(2)=5
second subtract (1/3)(2) from both sides: 1/3w=5-(1/3)(2)
solve:1/3w=5-2/3
1/3w=13/3
multiply both sides by the reciprocal: (3/1)1/3w=(3/1)X(13/3)
w= 13

distribute
1/3w + 2/3 = 5

subtract
1/3w = 13/3

divide 13/3 by 1/3 which is the same as multiplying 13/3 by three which equals 13

w= 13

hope that helped

2007-06-12 17:11:15 · answer #5 · answered by Robyn G 2 · 0 0

1/3(w+2)=5
1/3w+2/3=5

1/3w+2/3-2/3=5-2/3
1/3w=4 1/3 or 13/3
multiply both sides by 3
w=13

using cross multiplication
1*1(w+2)=5*3
w+2=15
w=13

1/3 (w + 2) = 5
w+2=5*3
w=15-2
w=13#

You can do this:
w+2 = 5*3
so w = 15-2
so w=13
*or*
you can just look to see what number times one third makes 5. Answer? 15. So w must be 13.
