It is possible on the intelligence front. For example recently they have introduced a car which runs on compressed air, if that technology is mass produced for India and adapted for all vehicles in India. India would probably be the only country independent of foreign oil, thus light years ahead of China, or even USA. But they have to come up with ways to strengthen themselves economically and promote equality for everyone. Then they have to increase their military offensive just to intimidate the terrorist threats next door in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Off-course if all this starts to happen, China who is their neighbor would get very paranoid thus we could see a weapons built up in the likes of the US-USSR Cold War.

China has a lot of advantages over India.
China is richer in natural resources.
China has more people.
China has more agricultural potential
China as less poverty (poor true, but compared to India...)
China's government is a bit less competitive in its innerworkings.
China does not have a caste system
China is aggressively building a modern infrastructure as fast as it can.
It's easier to start a business in China
India has better higher education institutions
India as a whole is more culturally sophicated and more adapted to western practices
India has some real obstacles. Infrastructure is lacking and it's not being improved. India is not managing well the few natural resources it has. India is involved in several military conflicts that drain it's efforts elsewhere (sri lanka, bangledesh, pakistan). Pollution is very bad in India. Poverty is scary in India. I'd much rather be poor in China. The living is actually better. Poor Chinese eat regularly. It's almost impossible to start a business in India. One has to have serious serious connections, and the political system plus taxes are very punative to Indian businesses.
These things are meaningful in the realm of world power

India probadly be more developed country socially in 40 years than China. Still, India will probadly be looked at better by democratic developing nations than China. Still, likely to occur is Anglo-Indian axis to Balance out the China-Russia in the long term. Still, India creativity with creating goods out of nothing is something that China never does. India may more curropt than China, but India has some form of Democracy that will move them up the Human Development index quicker than China in 40 years.

I dont think it would become a super power, although I think it will be an important and possibly influential country. I think that the size of the country limits its growth potential.

if they can close their bureaucratic mess of a government they have and harness the power of their populace, yes. But since bureaucracies tend to go away very very quietly, I doubt it.
The ambitious Indians just come to America and make better lives here.
