First you need to find out weather the cable is Straight Cable or Cross Over.
Just look at the Wires Connected to the pins and you would know.
1,2,3, and 6 are the once used for sending and receiving Data.
1236 are connect to 1236 then its a straight cable.
1236 are connected to 6321 then is a cross cable.
Buy a cross cable or ask a friend to clip it for you then connect both the Laptop and Computer using the cross cable.
You need set IP address for two computers and then connect 2 computer via cable.
Set IP address for your computer:
1. Get to the Microsoft Windows desktop.
2.Right-click on My Network Places or Network Neighborhood and click Properties.
3.Right-click on Local Area Connection and click Properties.
4.Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties. If this is not present, you'll need to install this protocol.
5.In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, select "Use the following IP address" if not already selected and specify the new IP address you wish to use. While entering this data you'll also need to specify the subnet mask and default gateway.
Example:
Computer1
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Computer2
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Then you need to shar the Files or Folders you wish to access from the other machine.
If you still need any calrification please get back to me.

By connecting you will only be able to share data.
Windows 2000/Windows XP (Dynamic IP)
To do this, you must have a "Cross-connect cable" then attach it to both computers through ethernet cards. Then go to Start | Run then type "cmd" (without the quotes). At the command prompt, type "ipconfig" (again, w/o the quotes). Do those steps on both systems and make sure you that the IP address is something like 169.254.XX.XX and the subnet 255.255.0.0.
Share (folder share and security) your folder to be accessible to everyone.
Windows 2000/Windows XP (Static IP)
Goto Control Panel and select Network Connections. Select and open your Local Area Connection then click on Properties button.
On the General Tab, in the This connection uses the following items, select TCP/IP then click on Properties, fill up the fields using Use the following IP address radio button. In the IP address field, make sure that the first 3 sets of your IP address is identical on both machines (e.g. 192.168.0.1 for the first machine and 192.168.0.2 for the laptop) and the subnet must be identical like 255.255.255.0.
Share (folder share and security) your folder to be accessible to everyone.
Happy Sharing!

Yes you can with a crossover cable.
They are different than standard ethernet cables - ( crossoved over)
Usually much more expensive.
Get a router - they are on sale on big box stores all the time.
All brands are fine.
You can use standard cheap ethernet cables or a wireless if your laptops have wireless installed.
No extra drivers needed.

just go into explorer, select 'my computer' and right click. Map a new network drive and put in the name of your laptop or desktop (whichever you are not typing onto) and the drive you want to link to, most likely C. That should allow you to access the hard drive of one computer from another. If your laptop is connected wirelessly through the same router as your desktop, you don't even need to hardwire them, you can do the same steps through the wireless connection.
