Anyone with kids or pets will probably be faced at some time with this unpleasant bit of housekeeping. Here's a way to clean up the mess and banish lingering odors.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step One
Remove as much of the vomit as possible from the carpet without spreading the mess.
Step Two
Pour dry cleaning fluid over the stain.
Step Three
Blot the stain with a dry, white cloth.
Step Four
Apply a small amount of mild liquid detergent to the stain.
Step Five
Blot again with the cloth.
Step Six
Flood the stain with water.
Step Seven
Blot again with the cloth.
Step Eight
Pour a small amount of ammonia over the stain.
Step Nine
Blot again.
Step Ten
Apply a little more detergent to the stain.
Step Eleven
Blot again.
Step Twelve
Flood the area with water.
Step Thirteen
Blot one last time.
Tips & Warnings
* Dry cleaning fluid can be purchased at home supply stores or the dry cleaners.
* Always test the cleaning solutions on an inconspicuous part of the carpet before using them on a large area.
* Use a white cloth rather than a colored one to prevent any dyes from coming off on the carpet.
* As you blot, keep turning the cloth so that you are using a clean, dry section to pick up the stain and the cleaning fluids from the carpet. Don't rub.
* If using a brush to help clean the stain, always brush from the outer edges of the spill inward to prevent the stain from spreading.
Overall Things You'll Need
* Dry Cleaning Fluid
* Soft Dry Cloth
* Water
* Ammonia
* Mild Dish Detergents

You won't believe this but vomit contains sulfuric acid. Stomach acid that breaks down food before exiting the stomach. First you need a base chemical to neutralize the acid. Make a strong mixture of baking soda and water. Wet it with a towel and lightly ring dry. You should still see drops coming off the bottom. Then vigorously rub the wet towel on the spot and a little beyond it. Second, mix 50/50 of Simple Green and water into a sprayer bottle. Spray the spotted area generously then let it sit for about 10 minutes. Then get a dry towel and rub the area as dry as possible. If the stain still persist, strengthen the Simple Green mixture and try again.
Final step is just to vacuum the area to remove more moisture. There are so little liquid left on the carpet that it will not harm your vacuum.
Good luck.

it matters on how long the vomit has stayed on the carpet before you tried to remove it. vomit can instantly stain a carpet with the stomach juices, but in most cases it can be removed by a professional carpet cleaner.pros's have access to far better spotting agents than you do and the steam cleaners are far more powerful than you can rent.the smell can be removed with several agents that pros's use to.
for the future you should keep a spray bottle with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water and use that to try to keep up with the spots. I would also talk to your baby's doctor about the cause of all the vomiting ,there has been some reports over the years of reactions by small children to carpet.

Remove the carpet, and install linoleum, tile, peel and stick vinyl, or even just wood.
Carpet is the number one problem in the homes of asthmatics and allergy sufferers.
Carpet holds an unbelievably large amount of bacteria and dust.
Carpet holds flakes of dead skin, which are food for and attract dust mites.
No matter how clean you think your carpet is, a filthy linoleum floor is a healthier thing for a baby to crawl on than a carpet.
The linoleum or tile is much easier to clean, it takes less time to thoroughly clean it, you can actually sanitize it (you can NEVER sanitize carpet completely, no matter what anyone tells you), you can install it yourself with ease if you find out exactly what to do first, it is relatively inexpensive, and best of all, it doesn't hold odors.
If you wanna get the smell out of the carpet, you could try Febreeze. You could also try vinegar, baking soda.

I would be more worried about why my baby is vomitting all over the house....Should he/she be taken to the hospital? How old is this "baby", to just spontaniously turn "Linda Blair" everywhere?
Keeping a clean house isn't rocket science- Someone vomits you get a bucket of soapy water and clean it up... It's not pleasant, but not hard..
Get a scrub brush and some clean towels. I use cheap shaving cream and warm water... I wipe up all the solid bits with paper towel and use the scrub brush/shaving cream on the spot... I blot with the clean towels and repeat if necessary.. If I were you I would invest in a steam cleaner...
When the rug is dry I sprinkle it with baking soda and let it sit overnight and vacuum the next day....

I have some personal experience with this same problem. We were able to get most of the smell out with a steam cleaner. The stains however were permanent, it seems that the contents of a baby's stomach just the thing for bleaching the color out of a carpet.

Get on your hands and knees, go to a corner of the room and gently pull back the carpet. If there are hardwood floors there, you're in luck.
Pull the entire carpet out. Discard. Buff and shine hardwood floors as needed.
