You will need a passport and a visa. If you come for a visit, you can just get a tourist card on the plane or at the border. It is good for up to 180 days. You must return to the border every 180 days to renew it unless you get an FM3 visa. An Fm3 visa allows you to live in Mexico and must be renewed at the nearest immigation office to your residence in Mexico every year. In order to qualify for an FM3 visa, you must meet income requirements...in other words you must have proof of a minimum monthly income. If you are young, and planning to work in Mexico , you will find that is VERY difficult to do. You will need an FM3 with a work permit. To get that you must have a skill that is needed in Mexico. You must find an employer who will promise you a job and write a letter for immigration stating that he is offering you a job that he cannot find a qualified Mexican for. Then you have to pay several hundred dollars, go thru a lot of paperwork and waiting to get the visa. Jobs pay very little, even for many professionals. You can go to the website below to read the information. It is in Spanish. You need to make an appointment at the nearest Mexican consulte to your location to discuss your eligibility, and apply for an FM3 if you qualify. It is very difficult to move to Mexico and earn a living. It is fairly easy to move here if you are retiring and have a steady income.

I am from the US and live in Mexico. To answer your question a passport and a tourist visa (good for up to 30-days) you can extend that at the airport (immigration office at most airports) or go to the immigration office in the city and ask for an extension of your tourist visa (they will usually give you an additional length of time). This tourist visa does not allow you to work...only visit.

Good luck!
