Medela is known to be the best.

I bought, in an emergency run to Wal-Mart afterhours, a First Years brand double pump for about $60 when my daughter, who was in the NICU, was first born. She's now 5 1/2 months & I'm still using the pump. It works great & is considerably cheaper than the Medela.

Everyone I know who nursed for a year or more and worked full time had either a Medela Pump'n'Style or an Avent Isis electric dual pump.

Neither is cheap, but a cheap pump is worse than useless.

Either of those will stand up to heavy use, and constant washing. You can get replacement parts easily. And they efficiently drain both breasts quickly, which is a must if you're working.

If you don't need an electric pump, just one for occasional use, the Avent Isis hand pump is fantastic. Much more comfortable and effective than any other I tried, and it operates "trigger style." Avoid "syringe" style pumps at all costs. They're frustrating, slow, and not very effective, plus they are awkward and will wear out your arm way before you're done.

Sometimes insurance will pick up part of the cost of a good pump if your OB writes you a "prescription." (My insurance covered 60% of the cost--they even delivered it to me--and I could charge the other 40% to my flexible spending account.)

Medula makes one of the best pumps on the market. But this is my suggestion. Rent one from the hospital for the first month or two. That way if for whatever reason breastfeeding doesn't work out you haven't wasted $250+ on a pump. Also, I had absolutely no luck pumping, it just didn't work for me, so I am glad that I didn't invest the money in an expensive pump.

Good luck to you and congrats.

I love my Medela Pump In Style! My baby was in NICU for 5 days and I had no trouble pumping enough milk for him.

Medela Pump in Style! It's like $250, but our insurance paid for 90% of ours since we asked for a prescription for it from our physician. Check into your insurance and ask your doctor for a prescription for one! We paid $25!
