I searched everywhere for what you are looking for and the closest I could get is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Season it gives you the lowdown on the whole thing. maybe if you read on and find other keywords to go by that may be able to help you ok?

These names are English, derived from the Anglo-Saxon and French. The name "fall" was used up until about the eighteenth century, when many English name endings were changed from "-us" to "-ous". 'Fall" was dumped in favour of the more "European" "autumn" at the same time. It was Webster's Dictionary which changed the spellings back to the older English, but that is only valid for the United States of America now.
