If the tax rate is 10% and the tax came to $1.90 then the amount taxed must be $19 (since 10% of $19 = $1.90).

The amount taxed is $19.

so 10% of the mystery number is $1.90 This would mean the amount is $19. You would know this because getting 10% of any number is easy. You just move the decimal back (to the left one place). For example 10% of $52 would be $5.20.

Hey Bart. Start by writing equations for the information given.

Let X = amount taxed, therefore:

(0.10)(X) = 1.90

Solving for X shows that X = 19

note: the $36.50 info is irrelevant!

$1.90 is 10% of $19.00, so I think that's the answer. I don't see what the total of $36.50 has to do with anything.

let x be the amount that is not tax, than 36.50 - x is the amount that is taxed

.1 (36.50 - x) = 1.90
36.50 - x = 19
-x = -17.50
x = 17.50

36.50 - 17.50 = $19.00

$19.00 is the amount is taxed

$19

work backwards:

something times .10 equals $1.90

so take 1.90 and divide by .10 and you'll get 19

Let x = cost of the car before tax (in dollars) Then the tax on the car is 8% of x, or 0.08x. price + tax = total paid x + 0.08x = 40,230 1.08x = 40,230 x = 40,230/1.08 = 37,250
