% Increase = (Amount of increase * 100)/(Original amount)

Increase = 39.37 - 36 = 3.37

% increase = 3.37 * 100/36

Its simple arithmetic.
How much larger (as a percent of 36 inches) is 39.37 inches?
So (39.37 - 36) / 36 = .0936. To express as a percent move the decimal 2 places to the right, so its 9.36% larger.
