Thanks for the two points

It kind of depends on what you mean by "Toughest". Martial arts, wrestling and boxing are the roughest sports in which the athlete has to take a lot of punishment, but they are not technically the most difficult sports to learn.
Football, rugby and hockey are all physical team sports where you rely on other members of the team to help you win. There are much more variables that go along with winning in a team sport than an individual sport so in one sense they are the toughest, but can also be considered easy since you have people helping you.
Marathons, decathalon, pentathalon, heptathalon, etc type sports are extremely difficult in that they require different skills and incredible endurance. Physically they are the thoughest to do.
But I honestly have to say that gymnastics is by far the most difficult sport (for men and women). That is the only sport that requires stregth, speed, flexibility, precision, endurance, style and luck. Anyone can learn to box, wrestly or do martial arts. If you are good enough, you can be a champion and if somebody is better than you, you won't be. But not everyone can learn to be a good (or even mediocre) gymnast because the sport is so hard to learn. Even if you are the best gymnast in the world, one mistake in the competition could put you in last place. And gymnastics also has to be considered the most dangerous sport (excluding extreme sports) since a bad mistake can literally kill you!

A sport that requires cooperation between an animal and a human in order to train for it and then successfully compete is, in my opinion, a "tougher" sport than those in which training involves a lone participant, or cooperation between a human and other humans. It depends on what you mean by toughest, though. If you just mean which sport is most likely to get you killed, then lots of them would qualify. My answer is based on the discipline and effort it takes to achieve the kind of perfection needed to compete at top levels. I think of grand prix dressage as the best example of my definition. I don't think that riding, at many levels, is the toughest sport out there. But at any level, it requires some degree of cooperation between the horse and handler.

Toughest or roughest? Getting kicked in the head is definitely rough! All the fighting sports are definitely both; I can think of nothing that is more physically draining over a short period of time than wrestling; and getting stomped or beaten to death is rougher than I would ever like to get... but, one should not confuse the sport with the injuries that one may receive. You can get injured or even killed, doing a lot of things that are neither rough or tough.
Consider the fact that it takes an elite athlete months to fully recover from running a marathon, without any injury. What's tougher, something that you can recover from in a couple of hours, or a couple of months?

There are a lot of physically demanding sports in this world. whether they be Boxing, Wrestling, K1 or any combat sports. Rugby League, Rugby Union or American Football. It all depends on the amount of physically exertion and the skill set demanded of the individual. Extreme ultra marathons, swimming, triathlons, iron man contests everything that taxes the human mind and body deserves to be respected. Gymnastics, decathlon, pentathlon, athletics, there are so many talented individuals who excel is so many sports that it is just amazing.

Sports where you get very little or no recovery time. A sport where there's no place to hide or let someone carry on for you.
Something where there's no time outs or breaks in action of ANY kind during competition. No sleeping in right field or waiting for the ball to be passed to you ,or stopping when the refs whistle blows every thirty seconds. Endurance is a must
also. My picks: Serious cross country and marathon runners;
Cross country skiing; champion level track events 400M and
over; cycling; Iron man triathletes; mountain climbing.
Boxing and wrestling only if it goes the distance, or close to it.

i would have to agree that mixed martial arts and boxing are the hardest sports, wrestling is hard too but not nearly as hard as the other two. however football is not just being big and strong especially nowadays, speed is the name of the game now. i have to say the most difficult thing in sports is running the 400meters in track, it's an all out sprint for a quarter of a mile

I think rugby is a very tough sport. With fields as big or bigger than football fields, with no timeouts, and barely any stoppage of play. You play for 40 minutes at a time and there are a lot of full field sprints to chase players. You also need a different type of endurance to be able to tackle people and take hits for that long. I also think mixed martial arts are very hard!

Probably either the Athletic Decathalon (men) or the Heptathalon (women). To keep changing disciplines from running, throwing and jumping at world's best levels in each individual event is pretty tough.
In the same vein the Olympic Pentahalon (Running, fencing, shooting, horse riding and swimming) requires so much training and skills that it taxes the world's best.

I do gymnastics, so I think that gymnastics in the toughest sport. It is the only sport in which you have to defy gravity. Now, physics says thats impossible, but somehow we do it. And, getting hurt is not uncommon. Boxing and wrestling are hard im sure, but football, now come on. It doesnt take any thought to fun at someone and try to tackle them to the ground. That's why they saying is, if gymnastics were easy, it would be called football. =)

The toughest olimpic event has to be the 400m hurdles. Not only do you have to run a 400, which to those who dont know is stait torture, but having to jump over hurdles is umbelievably hard.
