Basically you can do it with the following
1. Click Start -> Run
2. Type “msconfig” (without quotes) and press OK
3. You’ll see a dialog box and there you’ll find a tab called “Startup”
4. This contains all the types of programs running when you start the computer.
5. You can uncheck the programs you don’t want to run; BUT DO THIS WITH CARE.
Additional information
These programs are running based on the information given as follows
1. Some programs run from the startup folder. Usually located in following folders
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
2. Some programs run based on the following registry key values
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

go to "Run", and type in "msconfig". everything you're looking for can be found there, specifically under the "startup" tab.

Go to start menu.
Hit run.
Type in MSCONFIG.
Then click the start up tab.
To try and remove some of these items I used www.bleepincomputer.com .
Type in the start up item and it tells you weither it is needed or not
