You can take a course of a few months which will qualify you to be someone else's kitchen slave for the rest of your life, or you can get an Associates or Bachelor's degree in culinary and food service management, which will qualify you to create, operate and manage a successful food service business, enabling you to actually have a life.

There are two famous schools in the USA for culinary arts degrees; The Culinary Institute of America and Johnson & Wales university. They have websites that you can check out to get all the details of their extensive programs.

That's kind of like asking how long medical school takes.
The initial school can be 1-2 years (in some cases less than 1 year) however, what you can do after finishing your initial school is truly limited. Like any true professional you have to take advanced courses and schooling and that can take many more years following your initial school just depending on what it is you plan to do.

If you go to a 4 year college with a culinary program you're looking at 4-6 years to complete all the general ed requirements. Going to a school that is liberal/visual/performing arts schools with a culinary program can be a 2 -3 year deal.

A program stricly for culinary arts that gives you a certificate not a degree can be 9-10 months.

It really depends on the school and the student. I have a friend who is taking an 18 month course at a culinary school in Kentucky. You should check around at different culinary schools to see how long their programs normally are.
