The corporate media wants to brutalize the electorate and keep it docile.
The corporate media:
CNN (Time Warner),
Fox (Murdock),
ABC (Disney),
CBC (Viacom, Inc.),
NBC, MSNBC, CNBC(General Electric)
This are all branches of American corporations and so there are themes they will not touch.
Even C-Span is not able to be really free to ask some questions.

Because our political parties are so close together on policy we rarely notices any real difference in the outcome of elections. Both parties cater to corporations and business interest, and most the "issues" are about things that are not under the control of politicians. On the rare occasions when the public really wants something changed, both parties shift their positions to stay in favor. There is a greater difference geographically within a party that between the mainstreams positions of Republicans and Democrats. Since there is so little difference on things that matter the only people who really care are those who treat it like a sport. It is not as if the Democratic politicians as a party really tried to stop Bush's war. Remember Lieberman and Gephardt lining up in support of Bush.

How should Americans, or anyone for that matter, treat politics?
The reason Americans (and all others who have one vote to render) take it so seriously is the fact that they get to vote for one "team" at a time. In the States a person can vote for a Democrat for Senate and Republican for President, but few choose to split their ticket.
There are two camps on the political scene today (in the West). Socialist and Capitalist. They are each seeking to take voters down a different road. One to prosperity the other to a welfare State.
I think it's pretty important stuff and I'm pulling for my "team".

You are mistaken. To achieve your goal, you have to compromise. To compromise, you have to have people come to agreement and abandon their values, their ethics. No. That's wrong. We are strong as a nation because of our differences. Dictators want total agreement. WE don't. We need brakes and gas no matter what direction our nation is headed. We don't need brake-gas pedals, or gas-brake pedals. I do have nothing but contempt for the following: Voting for who you think will win rather than your own ethics. Political bigotry. Socialism (a more destructive ideology I do not know of). Other than that, as a Democrat, I urge people to disagree, dissent, and protest. We fought for that right. We're not going to lose it now. We have bloodless revolutions every two years (bigger ones every four). We are the envy of much of the world for that.

Yes it is absurd how polarized people can be much like a rabid sports fan. It is also scary because it is similiar to mind control. They do and think exactly what they are told and do not question the facts. In fact they will often substitute their own reality and deny the facts as lies.

Its part of American culture to treat all of life like its a sport; have you not noticed this before? Everything in American culture is looked at like a big football game; someone wins and someone loses. Why do you think we invented pro sports and pay our athletes ungodly amounts of money? Americans love competitive entertainment. Americans are like the Romans reincarnated.....Throw the gladiators in the ring and let the spectators cheer as they fight until death.........

I think Americans treat politics more like war than sports. Not only do they want to win...they want to destroy the people who disagree with them,

Because to many of us it is entertainment, we watch the show, have a post game discussion and evaluation of strategy and then we decide who the winner is. And if we can eat popcorn and drink beer while we watch, it is even better.

As P.T. Barnum said,"No one has ever gone broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public."Politicians have known this for a long time. And therefore they have promoted the "us" against "them" attitude that makes so many blind and deaf.
