Tonight i received a phone call from a buisness claiming that i had bounced a check but i do not have a banking account and never have. He said he had my phone number down for the contact number. Then he proceeded to tell me that if the sheriff shows up at my door i better have proof of who i am. Just wondering if they can base all of this over a phone number??

He sounds like a scam artist. You don't even need to open the door for the sheriff unless he has a warrant. He probably wanted you to "verify" your name, bank account number etc. Once a scam artist gets that info they can clean out your bank account. Since you told him you don't have an account he probably won't bother you again. If he does just hang up on him. Never tell a stranger whether or not you have a bank account. You could have really created a problem for yourself if you had an account and gave him the information.

I doubt it. I get mail and phone calls for the person who had my address and my phone number before me. Call back and tell them you need the acncpunt number and routing number or bank name where the check was from. Then call that bank and verify that you never had an account there.

opps, sorry about that. lol, just kidding. Since you are NOT the person they are looking for, it does not apply to you. just because they have your phone number does not mean that. the person that wrote the check may have missed a number, or maybe a cashier mistook a 4 for a 0, while writing it in. It happens, no one will knock on your door, they don't have your address, just a phone. If they harass you again, then have them mail it to you, then don't tell them your real address, have them send it to the address on the check. Change your phone number if they continue.
